Say ‘annyeong’ to South Korea

The pandemic had hit the tourism industry very hard but with the Korean Wave in the country and everyone going crazy behind K-pop and K-Dramas, people have developed a keen interest in traveling to South Korea. Young-geul Choi, Director, KTO New Delhi in conversation with Nikita Agarwal, talks about how they are promoting Korean tourism post pandemic and the attractions that one must-visit.

Q. How has the tourism been in Korea in the recent years? What has been the biggest challenge in recent years?

Tourist numbers from India to South Korea had been picking up every year before the pandemic. Approximately 140,000 Indian tourists travelled to South Korea in 2019. Naturally, the pandemic resulted in a total halt. We are therefore pleased that things now are improving. Since June, when travel to South Korea began, we have been working closely with our partners to promote Korea travel.

Q. People are developing a keen interest in visiting Korea globally, what according to you have been the determining factors behind this?

Over the past couple of years, there has been a huge growth of interest in contemporary Korean culture, which we refer to as Hallyu or the “Korean Wave”. In India too, K-Drama, K-Pop, and K-Culture are now widely consumed in Indian homes. It is a fantastic way to see South Korea’s beauty, people, and culture first-hand. All these factors encourage people to incorporate small aspects of Korean culture into their daily lives and inspire travel to Korea.
