Orika – adding flavour to your food

Its time to replace your boring old spices with the wide range of spices and seasonings from Orika. A brand from the house of Paras Spices, they add their decades old experience and expertise in making the products. In conversation with Akshita Budhiraja, Director, Orika we talk about her flavourful journey till now and her plans ahead.

Where do you derive your motivation from?

I’ve always been awed by Mrs Kiran Mazumdar from Biocon. I’ve always taken inspiration from how she broke the glass ceiling, took the challenges heads on, and reached the level that she is at now. Her fighting spirit and never give up attitude is something I try to learn from. I closely follow Gita Gopinath as well who’s the first deputy managing director of IMF and previously served as chief economist at IMF.

What was your vision behind Orika when you began?

I started working immediately post my marriage in a manufacturing unit at Moga where I was initially lost as it was a completely new chapter for me and I had very less knowledge about spices and suddenly being too young and handling a business with my husband in a factory which was male dominated, was quite a challenge for me. But I took it as a learning process and always wanted to start something which was not being passed down from our family so that’s when I and my husband came up with the idea of starting a new retail brand. Now it’s been 4 years since we started Orika and have seen a lot of ups and downs but with the support of our family and team, we have always been positive and motivated towards making our brand grow much further.
