Your complete makeup guide…..for morning and night

To be stunningly beautiful this special day, be particular about how your eyes look
For the day, make-up has to be light, subtle and carefully done. Foundation, shadows and blushers with a matte (non-shiny) finish are better. Or, use only compact powder instead of foundation. To add glamour to day eye make-up, apply a light colour shadow like mauve, or light brown over the entire eyelid. Then use dull gold or silver shadow on the upper lid closer to the lashes and also to highlight under the brows. Line your eyelids with brown or gray eye shadow, or eyeliner, for a softer effect. Then apply mascara, to make eyes look darker and brighter. For lipstick, use light pastel colours like mauve, lilac or pink. Or use only lip gloss. The colours should not be too intense or dark.

For the night, choose a water-based one. First apply astringent lotion for oily skin, or moisturizing lotion for dry skin. Wait for a few minutes and then use two shades of foundation to cover up pimples or scars, if any. Take very little lighter coloured foundation and apply it directly on the pimple or the scar. Avoid rubbing or smearing. Pat it into the skin. Then apply your normal foundation on the face and using a moist sponge, spread it evenly, going outwards. Apply tinted loose powder on top to “set” the foundation. Or, use compact powder.

Use powder blusher. Pink or peach blusher would suit most skin tones. Use your finger tips to dot the area with blusher. Then, blend with the brush, outwards and slightly upwards. For the night and for a more dramatic effect, use a dark brown or dark grey eye shadow on the eyelids close to the lashes and stroke it upwards and outwards. For the smoky eyed look, line the eyes with eyeliner close to the lashes and then smudge the eyeliner slightly with a sponge tipped applicator. It should not be a harsh line. For lips, go for rose, coral or pink.

Winter leads to skin darkening. How can one avoid it?
Apply an anti-tan sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the sun. Use a facial scrub twice a week. Mix ground almonds with curd and rub gently on the face. Wash off with water. Apply olive oil on arms and legs before bath. Thrice a week, mix gram flour (besan) with curd, lemon juice and pinch of turmeric into a paste and apply. Wash off after half an hour.

How can make-up harm dry skin?
Foundation and powder can cause moisture loss and make the skin drier. Over time, dry skin can become dehydrated and sensitive, developing red patches and flaky skin. Remove make-up with a cleansing gel and use creamy foundation for dry skin.

How do hot water showers affect the hair?
Hot water can affect the elasticity of the hair, causing it to break. That is why one should not brush wet hair. Hot water can also damage the roots, making the hair curly or frizzy. It removes the scalp’s natural oils and causes white flakes.
