The recently appointed Mayor of the City Beautiful, Rajesh Kalia’s inspirational tale from rags to riches stands testament to the fact that you are the painter of your own destiny.

Hailing his roots from Ahulana village of Haryana’s Sonipat district, Kalia was born in the family of rag pickers. However, this could not dim his light that shined from the within.

“I used to work as a rag picker after school. My two brothers, four sisters and I, would collect rags from garbage mounds and sell it to support the family. That was one phase of my life,” said Kalia who shifted to Chandigarh in 1977.

While Kalia was in class tenth, he also worked as a rikshaw driver after school hours to support his family to earn a living. With the passage of time, Kalia ventured into politics and ever since then, there has been no turning back.
