The texture of the skin can lose its smoothness due to various reasons. There may be several open and enlarged pores due to excessive oiliness of the skin. Then, there are dark spots, scars and pits on the skin, left behind by acne. These are difficult to remove, since the pits form due to the destruction of skin tissue. Sometimes, there is extra growth of scar tissue, developing into “keloids.” The result of this kind of scarring is that the skin becomes uneven and loses its smooth texture. Then, there may be dark patches or dark spots (freckles) on the skin, due to sun-sensitivity.
The uneven texture of the skin can also occur due to a build-up of dead skin cells. Exfoliation is the process that removes dead skin cells. It helps to improve skin texture, making the skin clearer, smoother and brighter. It also helps to produce an even colour tone. In oily skins, it helps to deep cleanse the pores and keep them free of clogged oil, thus preventing problems like open pores, blackheads, pimples and acne. One of the most important aspects is that the removal of dead cells actually helps to improve the renewal of new cells.
