The California-based music sensation, Jasmine Sandlas hails her roots from Jalandhar. She always aspired to pursue a career in singing. “I was born and raised in Punjab. I spent my childhood in Jalandhar and moved to California with my family at the age of 13. My mother encouraged me to start singing and performing on stage at the age of six. I’ve loved performing ever since. At a very young age, I felt the encouragement from my family and teachers at school. After moving to California, I started performing on any stage I could get my feet on. I usually performed Surinder Kaur or Reshma Punjabi folk songs. I come from a conservative Punjabi family and the ‘normal’ life is to get a good education, get married and have children. I had bigger dreams to create music and make a name for myself in the world. I always felt the urge to express myself through writing and creating melodies. Although I graduated with a degree in psychology and even went to Pre-Law School, I found myself coming back to music over and over again.”
Speaking about her musical journey, she said, “Once I moved to California, hip-hop completely took over my life. I started putting out my music on MySpace in 2007. In 2008, I released an album called ‘The Diamond’ and in 2012, I did an album called ‘Gulabi’. I did one song with Bohemia called ‘Adhi Raati’. Before ‘Yaar Na Miley’ happened, at least 20 of my songs had been out already. So when it did, I thought it will be just another song. I had no idea how massive it would become in Bollywood. It was a beautiful surprise.”
Sandlas’ first song was “Muskan” (2008) became a hit. In 2014, she began her Bollywood playback singing career with the song “Yaar Na Miley” for the film Kick. Upon its release, “Yaar Na Miley” went viral and topped the charts and Sandlas received wide critical acclaim for her singing style as well as earned several awards, including “Most popular song of year 2016 – PTC Punjabi Film Awards” & Screen Award for Best Female Playback. Sandlas subsequently earned more success by singing one of the Hindi cinema’s top charted songs, “Ishq Da Sutta”, “Raat Jashn Di”.
She has shown the critics that she is capable to spearhead a super hit and needless to say, she does not believes in taking all the credit. “I was just a little girl from Punjab with dreams larger than life. Ever since 2008, I have been building my fan base, starting from California and now worldwide. The fans have shown me much love and respect. It has given me courage and confidence”, said Jasmine.
