Building India’s Dedicated Hernia Institute

After years of learning from the world’s finest hernia centres, Dr. Ashvind Bawa—recipient of the Gimbernat Award from the American Hernia Society and an American College of Surgeons (ACS) NSQIP International Scholar, and former Professor & Head of Unit, Surgery at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H)—has transformed a long-held vision into reality with The Hernia Institute, built together with co-founders Dr. Ankit Mishra, a dedicated hernia surgeon from Hyderabad, and Dr. Vinayak Rengan from Chennai, a paediatric hernia specialist and AI expert. In this conversation, he shares why specialised care matters, how innovation is reshaping hernia surgery, and his vision for making world-class treatment accessible closer to home.

What inspired you to establish The Hernia Institute?

The idea began years ago while visiting renowned hernia centres like Shouldice Hospital in Canada and Cleveland Clinic in the USA. In 2014, I even secured the domain www.hernia.institute, believing one day India would have a dedicated centre. Today, The Hernia Institute focuses entirely on hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction, ensuring patients receive specialised care rather than just another routine surgery.

Why create a dedicated institute instead of treating hernias within general surgery?

Specialisation improves outcomes. Performing hernia surgery every day develops deeper expertise in choosing the right technique, managing complex cases and reducing recurrences. When the entire team is focused on one speciality, every aspect—from surgery to recovery—is designed around delivering better patient care. This is also why I chose to build the institute alongside Dr. Ankit Mishra, a dedicated hernia surgeon from Hyderabad, and Dr. Vinayak Rengan from Chennai, a paediatric hernia specialist and AI expert—a dedicated centre is the work of a committed team, not a single surgeon.
