In this conversation, HS Lucky, President of Chandigarh Congress, and his son Karanbir Singh, a lawyer and serving the State of Himachal Pradesh as Assistant Advocate General, speak about public life, law, values, family, and the bond they share beyond their professional identities.
HS Lucky, what first inspired you to step into public life and politics?
For me, public life was never just about politics. It was always about connecting with people and trying to make a difference in their lives. Since my younger days, I was drawn towards social work and public issues. When people place their trust in you and expect you to stand up for them, it gives you a strong sense of responsibility. Over the years, that connection with people became my biggest motivation. Chandigarh has given me a lot in life, and serving the city and its people has always been very close to my heart.
As Chandigarh Congress President, what has been the most meaningful part of your journey so far?
The most meaningful part has been the relationships and trust I have built with people over the years. Politics can be challenging, but when someone comes to you with a problem and leaves with hope or support, that feeling is unmatched. Whether it is working on civic issues, helping people in difficult situations, or contributing towards the cultural and heritage identity of Chandigarh, those moments of genuine public connection are what make the journey worthwhile.
Karanbir, what inspired you to pursue law as a profession?
Growing up, I was always surrounded by discussions about public service, people’s issues, and responsibility towards society. Watching my father work closely with people naturally influenced me. I felt law was a profession where I could not only build a career but also genuinely help people and stand for fairness and justice. Over time, that interest became a passion. Today, serving as Assistant Advocate General for the State of Himachal Pradesh has given me valuable experience and a deeper understanding of responsibility towards institutions and society.
How different are your personalities when it comes to work and decision-making?
We are actually quite different in many ways. My father is calm, patient, and has a very practical approach because of his long experience in public life. He understands people and situations instinctively. I, on the other hand, tend to analyse things more from a legal and structured perspective. But despite the difference in styles, we both believe in honesty, balance, and taking decisions with responsibility. In many ways, our differences complement each other.
