Aman Sachdev, co-founder of The Wine Merchant, has transformed Thailand’s wine industry with a vision of offering fine wines at fair prices. From his Italian roots and experiences to overcoming import challenges, Aman, along with his partner Nan Patira, has built a prestigious and transparent wine distribution business. Here, he shares his inspiring journey and future aspirations.
What motivated you to start The Wine Merchant in 2012?
I initially started as an agent representing several Italian wineries when I returned from Italy in 2009 after living there for 14 years. I felt that the prices being offered in Thailand were excessively high, which encouraged people to hand-carry fine wines when they returned to Thailand. My mission was to offer all wines at fair prices. Fortunately, my very good friend, and now partner, Nan Patira, also shared my vision, and we decided to start our own wine distribution business in Thailand.
How did you establish strong relationships with top winemakers and producers globally?
Honesty and transparency. We demonstrated our market knowledge and refused to make unrealistic commitments in order to get exclusivity for the brand(s). We achieved our committed targets and always paid our bills on time – in many instances, before the due date!
