Dr. Shweta Tahlan and Dr. Jitender Rohila are not just accomplished oncologists—they are a couple united by compassion, precision, and purpose. At Fortis Hospital, Mohali, they combine cutting-edge expertise in gynaecologic and gastrointestinal cancers with heartfelt care, redefining cancer treatment while nurturing a balanced, meaningful life together.
Dr. Shweta, what inspired you to specialise in gynaecologic oncology and robotic surgery?
My father was a surgeon and my mother is a gynaecologist. I’ve always looked up to them—they were my inspiration to pursue surgery. During my residency at MAMC, Delhi, I had the opportunity to work in the gynae cancer unit and learn from incredible mentors. Their guidance inspired me to specialise in gynaecologic oncology.
Dr. Jitender, what drew you towards gastrointestinal cancer treatment and minimally invasive surgery?
My interest in gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery developed during my residency at AIIMS, Delhi. I was drawn to complex and challenging surgical cases, which led me to pursue super-specialisation in surgical oncology.
What were some defining moments early in your careers that shaped the specialists you are today?
We were both fortunate to receive our oncology training at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai—the largest and most renowned cancer centre in India. Our time there transformed our understanding of cancer care. The clinical skills and values we learned from our mentors are deeply ingrained in our practice today. It was also at TMH that we learned robotic surgery.
What challenges have you faced in your fields, and how have you overcome them?
Every doctor’s journey is full of challenges, and learning never stops. Persistence and perseverance are key. When we treat a patient, we understand we’re caring for someone’s parent, spouse, sibling, or child. The responsibility is immense and humbling. That in itself is both a challenge and a blessing.
