What inspired you to pursue a career in cardiology and how does it align with your philosophy of positive living?
When I became a doctor and joined PGI in the late ’80s, cardiology was making rapid advancements with new treatments emerging for heart disease. The promise of interventional treatments like primary angioplasty, offering a viable alternative to medicine and surgery, drew me in. Seeing the potential of interventional percutaneous techniques to treat patients with critical heart ailments as an effective and less invasive alternative to open heart surgery was a very exciting prospect and inspiring. These landmark innovating treatments were just becoming available at the exact time when I was starting my professional journey. Looking back decades down the line I think that was the best choice I made and the wonderful romance with Interventional cardiology has been becoming even more intense with the passage of time. This decision has been immensely fulfilling and has aligned perfectly with my desire to make a positive impact on patients’ lives.
Amidst all this high-stress environment of cardiac care how do you personally maintain a positive outlook?
Maintaining a balance between professional and personal life is crucial, especially in the high-stress field of cardiology. To manage stress and lead a holistic life, I engage in various hobbies. I am extremely passionate about sports, particularly cricket, and I enjoy writing about it also. Reading is another key interest; my personal library reflects my love for literature, current affairs, contemporary history and International affairs. Music, especially old Bollywood songs, brings me great joy. Spending quality time with my family, travelling, and relaxing with friends also helps me stay relaxed and grounded. These activities create a healthy balance, enabling me to serve my patients with more rigour, renewed strength and positivity.
Can you describe a daily routine that you recommend for overall heart health and positive living?
For overall heart health and positive living, I recommend starting the day early with a refreshing morning walk. This should be at a moderately brisk pace with a warm-up and cooling period. I also recommend some Yoga and Puja for 20-30 minutes at this time follow the morning walk with a healthy breakfast, rich in fruits and nuts and some fresh juice. I believe breakfast should be heavy and the main meal for the day. Start your work schedule at around 9-9.30 and this can go on till 5.30-6 PM, interspersed with a short break for a very light lunch. In the evening, spend some time in the gym or doing some relaxing exercises. Dedicate 1-2 hours to family time, discussing the day’s events and unwinding together. Enjoy a light, early dinner, then spend an hour or so reading or enjoying music before going early to bed. I believe at least six hours of healthy sleep is absolutely essential for everyone for not only physical health but also mental health and allows you to start the next day fully refreshed and with renewed vigour.
