Take us through your professional journey. Is this something that you always wanted to do?
Ever since I was 5 years old, I wanted to be in the performing arts. For me, school was all about dance classes and drama classes; I was always inclined towards that area. When I was just 11 years old, I came first in Asia in my Trinity College of London exam for performing arts. So, as a child, I just couldn’t wait to get done with studies and pursue my dream.
What were the major challenges that you had to face so far? How did you overcome them?
After my debut film ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ failed at the box office, I wasn’t getting the kind of roles that I wanted. It was very heartbreaking but then Bhaag Johnny happened, but unfortunately that too failed so it was even more heartbreaking. I had hit a very low phase in my life by then which led to a lot of self-introspection. I took a backseat from it all and decided that I must work on myself and my craft in detail and a beautiful journey begun from there. I started everything again right from scratch. I joined a theatre workshop to learn acting and then joined the same theatre group for some stage plays written by Gulzar Saab and Salim Arif. I am so thankful to them for that opportunity because it gave me my strength back and the courage to follow my dreams second time around. It was then that I crossed roads with Addy (Director Adeeb Rais) who showed up as an angel in my life with the role of Koyal and ever since then, there has been no turning back.
