A dedicated MBBS, Gold Medalist, MS Gynae, Senior Consultant, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, high risk pregnancy specialist Dr. Ekawali Gupta’s passion for women’s health goes beyond delivering babies—it’s about empowering women through every stage of life. In conversation with Urban Melange, she shares her journey in medicine, challenges as a female doctor, advancements in women’s healthcare, and advice for aspiring medical professionals.
What inspired you to specialize in obstetrics and gynaecology?
There is something indescribable about the moment a mother holds her baby for the first time—the tears, the joy, the overwhelming rush of love. That moment is pure magic, and being part of it is an incredible privilege. Obstetrics and gynaecology is where science meets miracles. The ability to monitor fetal development, manage complex pregnancies, and utilize advancements like fetal medicine and minimally invasive surgeries to improve outcomes fascinated me from the beginning. It’s not just about delivering babies; it’s about caring for two hearts in one body—a responsibility that is both humbling and exhilarating. With every delivery, I relive the profound realization of how extraordinary the journey of motherhood is. Supporting women as they step into their power, nurturing life while rediscovering their own strength, is an honour.
How has your journey been as a woman in the medical field?
Being a woman in medicine is a journey of resilience and determination. We are conditioned to be strong, to endure, and to push forward against all odds. That strength becomes our foundation, shaping us into professionals who refuse to back down. Medicine is demanding, but so are we. We carry the weight of expectations yet rise—with skill, compassion, and an unwavering will to make a difference. My journey has been a testament to the power of women—to our ability to lead, heal, and break barriers with both precision and grace. When women uplift each other, there’s no glass ceiling we can’t shatter.
