Can you share your journey to becoming the first Sikh woman to win the Mrs. India title in the USA?
In the illustrious year of 1994, as Sushmita Sen ascended to the title of Miss Universe, a seed was planted in my mother’s heart—a vision of her daughter achieving similar feats. This aspiration marked the genesis of my odyssey in the world of fashion and beauty, a journey I embarked upon not of personal ambition but to realize a cherished dream of my mother’s.
My formal foray into pageantry commenced during my collegiate years, where I was honored with the title of Miss Hansa Mehta in the late ’90s, followed by a victorious stride as Miss Steel City (Miss Bhilai) in the early 2000s. Beyond the titles and the tiaras, my narrative took a significant turn upon my relocation to London, an experience that not only expanded my horizons but also refined my resilience and adaptability in a novel cultural milieu.
Fast forward to 2019-20, and I find myself adorned with the Mrs. India USA crown, a milestone that not only underscores my journey in the realm of beauty and fashion but also signifies my status as the first Sikh from Los Angeles to achieve this accolade. My path has been punctuated with both challenges and triumphs, yet my commitment to my passion has remained unwavering.
How has your background as a Sikh woman influenced your approach to fashion design?
My background as a Sikh woman profoundly influences my approach to fashion design, imbuing it with a rich tapestry of cultural heritage and a deep-seated belief in equality and inclusivity. Sikhism, with its core tenets advocating for egalitarianism and a respect for all beings, naturally extends into my creative ethos, shaping a design philosophy that transcends mere aesthetics to embrace a broader social narrative.
My designs are a celebration of this inclusivity, crafted to honor the individuality of each person. In my work, I strive to create garments that are not just pieces of clothing but expressions of the wearer’s identity, allowing them to present themselves to the world with dignity and pride. This approach is deeply rooted in the Sikh value of honoring the innate worth of every individual, reflecting a commitment to creating fashion that is accessible, respectful, and empowering.
