Balancing Medicine, Mind and Heart

Behind the crisp white coat and clinical precision lies a doctor whose journey into medicine began not just with ambition, but with a father’s dream. Dr. Balvin Kaur Ghai, Senior Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and IVF, brings a deeply human touch to a profession that often balances on the edge of science and emotion.

How do you stay updated in such a fast-evolving field?

I stay updated in this fast-evolving field by making learning a daily habit—whether it’s reading the latest journals, attending webinars, or discussing cases with peers. I follow evidence-based updates and global guidelines closely. Medicine never stands still, so staying curious, humble, and committed to growth ensures my patients always receive the most current, effective care.

What’s one daily ritual that keeps you grounded?

One daily ritual that keeps me grounded is starting the day in silence—just five minutes of stillness, breath, and gratitude. I center myself with a quiet prayer or intention, inviting clarity and calm before the day begins. That moment of connection—to self and something greater—helps me stay present, purposeful, and aligned no matter how busy the day gets.

How do you handle the emotional side of your profession?

Handling the emotional side of being a doctor requires intention and balance. It is important to care deeply, but not carry every patient’s burden home. Stay empathetic but set boundaries. Focusing on positive outcomes and patient progress keeps perspective amidst tough days. Sleep, nutrition and personal time are essential for showing up strong. Reconnecting with the “why” behind medicine helps keep purpose front and center.
