A pioneer in cardiac surgery, innovator and compassionate healer, Dr Harinder Singh Bedi has dedicated his life to transforming cardiovascular and thoracic care in India. From establishing Punjab’s first private-sector open-heart surgery programme to standardising multi-vessel total arterial beating-heart bypass surgery, his contributions have set new benchmarks in cardiac care. Recognised in the Limca Book of Records, published in leading international journals, and known for path-breaking surgical innovations, Dr Bedi continues to redefine excellence in heart care as the Director of Cardiovascular, Endovascular and Thoracic Sciences at Shalby Hospital, Mohali.
A Journey Built on Excellence
Dr Bedi hails from the historic villages of Dera Baba Nanak (paternal) and Dayalpur Sodhian (maternal). His father, Major KMS Bedi (Late), was a decorated Army officer, while his mother, Bhupinder Kaur Bedi, served as a Principal. Their values of discipline, empathy and service became the foundation of his career.
After schooling at St Joseph’s Academy, Dehradun, he pursued medicine at MGM Medical College and Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Hospital, Indore. He completed his Masters in Cardiovascular Surgery at PGI Chandigarh before further refining his expertise at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, gaining exposure to advanced cardiac techniques. He also played an important role during the formative years of Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi, contributing to the rapid evolution of cardiac surgery in India.
Pioneering Cardiac Care
Returning to Punjab, Dr Bedi established the state’s first private-sector open-heart surgery programme, bringing international standards of cardiac care to the region. He is widely recognised for standardising multi-vessel total arterial beating-heart surgery, a technique that enables bypass surgery without stopping the heart or using a heart-lung machine.
