For over 25 years, Dr. Swapna Misra has dedicated her life to advancing women’s healthcare with skill, compassion, and innovation. Widely recognised as one of India’s leading robotic gynaecological surgeons, she has performed more than 24,000 surgeries, transforming countless lives through minimally invasive techniques. Her journey reflects an unwavering commitment to excellence, continuous learning, and patient-centred care. In this exclusive conversation, Dr. Misra shares what inspired her medical career, how robotic surgery is reshaping gynaecological care in India, the importance of physical fitness for surgeons, and why self-belief remains the most powerful tool for every young woman aspiring to succeed in medicine.
What inspired you to become a robotic gynaecological surgeon?
My parents have been my greatest inspiration throughout my life. Their faith in me and their encouragement motivated me to pursue medicine as a profession. I have been practising as a gynaecologist for nearly 25 years, and from the very beginning, I knew that I wanted to serve humanity by helping women through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
As a doctor, there is no greater privilege than being able to save lives and improve the quality of life for patients. Every woman who walks into my clinic has her own story, concerns, and hopes. Whether it is helping someone overcome a serious gynaecological condition or supporting her through childbirth, making a positive difference in her life gives me immense satisfaction. That feeling continues to inspire me every single day and reminds me why I chose this profession.
You are often called India’s No. 1 robotic gynaecological surgeon. What does that recognition mean to you?
Recognition is always humbling, but more than anything else, it reminds me of the responsibility that comes with it. When a patient places complete trust in your hands, your decisions have the power to change her life. That trust is something I value deeply.
I feel fortunate to contribute to society through my work, and the most rewarding part of my profession is witnessing the smile that returns to a patient’s face after a successful recovery. Over the years, I have had the privilege of treating thousands of women suffering from complex gynaecological conditions using the latest robotic surgical techniques. Every successful outcome reinforces my commitment to providing safe, advanced, and compassionate healthcare.
How has robotic surgery changed outcomes for women in India?
Traditional gynaecological surgery often involved larger incisions, significant pain, and longer recovery periods. Naturally, many women were hesitant to undergo surgery because they feared prolonged hospital stays and delayed return to their normal lives.
Robotic surgery has transformed this experience completely. By combining surgical expertise with cutting-edge technology, it offers greater precision, minimal pain, smaller incisions, and much faster recovery. Many women are able to resume their daily activities and even return to work within a day or two after surgery. Their family members also do not have to take extended leave to care for them.
These remarkable advantages have encouraged more women to seek timely treatment and have significantly improved surgical outcomes, making robotic surgery an important advancement in modern gynaecology.
