Fighting Diabetes with Compassion and Clarity

As diabetes continues to rise across India, physicians like Dr. Puneet Aggarwal, a specialist in internal medicine and diabetes care based in Mohali, are playing a crucial role in prevention and management. In this conversation, he shares his journey, insights, and advice for living well with diabetes.

What inspired you to specialize in internal medicine and diabetes care?

I’ve always believed that India has a growing need for strong primary care physicians. Many people still lack access to basic healthcare, especially in underserved areas. That’s what drew me to internal medicine—I wanted to bridge that gap and offer comprehensive care.

I chose to specialize in diabetes because it’s one of the fastest-growing health concerns, particularly in India. Almost every family today has at least one member living with diabetes. My goal is to reduce the burden of this disease in the region where I practice. Alongside diabetes, I manage other acute and chronic conditions like hypertension, thyroid issues, fatty liver, infections, and even poisonings. This allows me to serve the community more holistically.

How has your journey been so far, and what has been your biggest challenge?

Becoming a doctor is always a tough journey, especially when you come from a middle-class background with no family history in medicine. There were many challenges, but consistency, dedication, and hard work helped me push through.

My parents were my biggest support system, and their encouragement shaped my path. After over a decade of medical education, I’ve been practicing in Chandigarh for almost ten years now. Challenges never stop, but my commitment to serving patients and the drive to keep evolving keeps me going.
