Growing up in a family that valued simplicity and compassion, my understanding of luxury was shaped by my mother’s wisdom. She always taught me to spend money wisely, steering clear of unnecessary purchases. Her lessons were not just about saving money but about appreciating the essence of living a meaningful and grounded life.
Now, by the grace of God, I have the means to afford luxurious assets, but for me, they are not merely status symbols or tools for showing off. Instead, I view luxury as an enabler—something that enhances comfort, provides safety, and saves time, ultimately allowing me to stay focused on my entrepreneurial journey, free from the disruptions caused by outdated tools or technologies.
As an entrepreneur, I also find value in luxury from a unique perspective: as a way to experience and understand the latest technology. These experiences are invaluable in assessing how innovations can be applied or adapted for the benefit of the masses. Luxury, in this sense, is not about indulgence but about exploration and growth, both personal and professional.
A Worrisome Trend
While I hold these values close, I am often saddened by how today’s younger generation perceives luxury. Many are caught in a cycle of blind consumerism, spending beyond their means to project a status symbol. I was recently shocked to learn about 18-year-old students traveling in business class, using credit card EMIs to fund such extravagance—just to display an image on social media.
