The well-known NGO of the region, Rani Breast Cancer Trust, brought to the city the much acclaimed play, “With Love, Aap Ki Saiyaara” by Mumbai-based Ekjute Theatre Group on December 18th at Tagore Theatre.
The play is written and directed by famed film and theatre artist Juhi Babbar Soni, who herself played the lead role. Juhi is the daughter of the well-known actor Raj Babbar and theatre stalwart Nadira Zaheer Babbar.
After a gap of two years due to the COVID pandemic, RBCT bounced back with its annual fundraising function and offered a different treat this time to the people in the city. In earlier years, well-known Bollywood and Punjabi singers performed at its functions. These included celebrated artists like Gurdas Maan, Rekha Bharadwaj, Harbhajan Mann, Satinder Sartaj, Jassi Gill, and Bubble RaiNooran Sisters.
The play that was staged is inspired by a character, Saiyaara, conceived by Nadira Babbar. It is the story of a passionate, urban, and undaunted woman. The lead character, Saiyaara dipped into various emotions of a woman and, in the process, explored her own identity. The play has been highly applauded among others by well-known personalities like Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher, Rajeshwari and Gurdas Maan.
Formed in 1981, Ekjute Theatre Group has adapted and presented works of several eminent playwrights like Bertolt Brecht, Albert Camus, and Badal Sircar.
Founded in 2007 to spread awareness about breast cancer, RBCT has been organizing seminars and workshops in Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana, besides organizing free mammography of needy women. This year, the Trust has embarked upon another new project, “Never Say Die” to help needy young people between the age groups of 25 and 35 years to undergo heart surgeries. The project is in memory of Dr. Karan Sandhu, a multifaceted young man who lived by the motto, “Never Say Die”. l
