An epitome of firm grit, perseverance and intellect, Dr Deepak Bhasin, Director and Head, Department of Critical Care, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mohali sheds light on the COVID-19 pandemic.

How has your daily  routine changed due to the COVID-19 outbreak?

I am an early riser and I usually wake up around 5 am. So, before the virus outbreak, I used to go for a morning walk with my family and friends, which proved be a great morning rejuvenator for me. However, this routine has now come to a halt. So, I miss the fresh air since I work in the Intensive Care unit that is more of a closed environment. However, one positive is that we are getting more time to spend with our family after the working hours are over at the hospital.

On the professional front, our work has definitely increased. Earlier I used to start my day at the hospital around 9 am, however, now I start by 8 am and the working hours often go up to 10 hours a day. Earlier I used to sit with the patient and give them a healing touch, which proved to be a boost for their mental strength. However, that element has gone now.

What are the major challenges that you have been facing these days?

The major challenge that I face these days is motivating my team to stay positive. The pandemic has certainly taken a toll on our mental well-being and I take it as my responsibility to reaffirm my team that everything will be fine soon. I ensure that everyone takes all precautionary measures to contain the spread of the virus.
